heart shaped food

Paul eats breakfast at 6:00 during the week.  And while I am very thankful that is later than it used to be, it is still early.  Early enough that I don’t want to be up an hour before making a big breakfast.  We love grits, particularly yellow grits.  Grits do not take long to fix.  Grits are healthy, filling, and inexpensive.

Heart shaped food is a frequent thing around here.  Even early in the morning when I don’t want to get up extra early, I like to sometimes make some type of heart shaped food for my husband’s breakfast.  He is about to enter the cold outdoors and work hard all day providing for his little wifey.  A warm bowl of grits warms the body on a cold winter morning and if you put hearts in them, they will warm the heart as well as the body.

cheese hearts in grits

Does he really appreciate heart shaped food?  One morning after fixing him a bowl of grits with hearts in them, he called me from work and asked what I was having for breakfast.  (6:00 is too early for me to eat.)  When I told him, “Grits,” he told me to put hearts in mine too.  Adding, “It makes them taste better.”  Awww. He melts my heart like cheese in hot grits.

For a single serving of a bowl of grits, I fix 1/3 cup of grits (white or yellow) with 1/8 tsp. of salt in 1 ¼ cup of water.  While they are cooking, I slice a piece of cheese about ¼ of an inch thick and cut three or four hearts out of the slice with a heart shaped cookie cutter.  (He bought me two sets of heart shaped cookie cutters so I would have all sizes for the many different heart shaped foods that I make!  He bought me this one and this one.)  All the scrap cheese pieces get stirred into the grits and the heart shaped cheese placed on top.
